€ 2,000 STOLEN FROM AN 83 YEAR-OLD IN ALLERONA THROUGH FAKE ACCIDENTE SCAM, WOMAN REPORTED BY CARABINIERI
The Carabinieri of the Allerona Station, concluding a thorough investigative activity, reported in a state of freedom a 33-year-old from the province of Naples, burdened with specific previous offenses and currently under house arrest, for fraud in conspiracy with other individuals to be identified.
The activity stemmed from a report filed by an 83-year-old woman from the area who, in early November, fell victim to a scam involving the usual, unfortunately often effective, trick of a fake road accident involving a relative. Contacted by a self-proclaimed lawyer over the phone, the interlocutor had told her that her grandson had caused a serious car accident, and it was necessary to immediately regularize the insurance payment with cash or even with valuables. Clearly frightened by the circumstances, the lady had collected what was available to her, just under €2,000 in cash and jewelry, and handed them over to the intermediary of the fake lawyer who had appeared at her home shortly after. The investigations carried out by the military made it possible to trace the identity of the young man who had presented himself at the elderly woman’s house, leading to his report; the investigation continues to identify the accomplices of the 33-year-old.
To prevent this heinous crime, the Carabinieri advise always being wary of requests for money or goods to be handed over to self-proclaimed lawyers or members of law enforcement since, in no case, are there cautions for the release of individuals allegedly involved in criminal activities. In the event of received calls, it is advisable to immediately verify with one’s relatives or inform a neighbor and report what is happening to the emergency number 112. Finally, never admit strangers into the house who usually present themselves during the mentioned calls as lawyers, Carabinieri, or presumed emissaries of either.
