Buon Natale!

ENGLISH VERSION

LET’S PREPARE TO WELCOME JESUS

In a time like ours, marked by drama and constant concerns about the war events that grip us, the approach to Christmas takes on a particularly different tone due to current circumstances. The early Christians, living in the anguish of persecutions, initially celebrated only the mystery of the death and resurrection of Jesus, aligning it with the Jewish Passover. Later, toward the end of the third century, a liturgical cycle of annual festivities was established, incorporating the celebration of the birth of Jesus: Christmas. Subsequently, in 1223, St. Francis of Assisi, fueled by a fervent desire to see the Baby Jesus, created the living nativity scene at Greccio. This transformed the festivity into a more significant event, acquiring a charm of tenderness that continues to captivate successive generations for the sublimity of the mystery.

With this brief introduction, let’s prepare to welcome Jesus into our hearts as Christmas is imminent. It is already Advent, a time of joyful anticipation. The antiphon of the first Vespers of the first Sunday of Advent resounds with compelling strength: “Announce to the peoples: Behold, God comes, our Savior.” The prophet Isaiah encourages us in our mystical anticipation with the words: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light…A child is born for us! A son is given to us!…He shall be called Wise Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:1-3, 5). These words offer great hope for us all: divine light brimming with joy that brings peace, hope, and freedom to our world marked by violence, pandemic, and war. The mystery of the Incarnation, the coming of the Word of God, who becomes a person and dwells among us, is relived punctually in our hearts. In this marvelous adventure of God clothing Himself in our fragile human nature, humanity discovers the gratuitousness of the limitless power of God’s infinite love.

Christmas teaches us that Jesus “did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness” (Philippians 2:6-7). He chooses poverty, taking on human nature with all its precariousness. A new light radiates in the heart of humanity, called to contemplate the extraordinary event in the history of salvation and bear witness to it worldwide. The charm of Christmas is not in the magical atmosphere of twinkling lights that beckon us to consumerism, but in humbly looking with the eyes of the heart and the spirit of faith at the mystery of salvation. The Lord comes among us, and humanity, like the poor shepherds of Bethlehem, encounters Christ, the awaited Savior, and adores Him, aware of the extraordinary importance of the birth of Christ the Redeemer. Through this remarkable coming into the world, our hearts become the cradle of Jesus. Thus, our lives change, history changes, humanity changes. Let us be involved in this extraordinary event personally, socially, and religiously, as Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini urged Catholics in his Christmas Day homily in 1993: “Personally, by living life with sobriety, downsizing our desires; socially, by seeking justice in our relationships with others and caring for the well-being of others; religiously, by giving praise and glory to God and serving Him in the spirit of the Beatitudes.”

Let’s prepare to welcome the Lord Jesus by eliminating every form of laziness, the aridity that often pervades our spirits, those moments of darkness, discouragement, lack of trust, and commit ourselves not to delay our joyful encounter with the Lord who is coming. Like those shepherds on that night, filled with great fear when an angel appeared to announce the great joy “Today, in the city of David, a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord,” we too, in our lives, receive the message of salvation repeated by the angel, just as it happened in Bethlehem.

It is a message of love that resonates throughout the world, an announcement we receive with joy and hope because it illuminates our lives. Jesus is born for everyone: believers and non-believers, for humanity hoping to build a better world, for peoples suffering due to the perverse logic of war. History, humanity finds the One who saves, who liberates us from anguish, evil, war, hatred, violence. It finds hope because there is a Savior who gives new meaning to life, to history, because the birth of Jesus renews everything and teaches us to promote truth, justice, to restore “wounded and trampled” peace and solidarity, to overcome hunger in the world, to grow in love, and to live as true children and brothers regenerated by His love marked by mercy.

Merry Christmas!

[767

post-103611","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-riflessioni-con-letizia","cs-entry","cs-video-wrap
["GET
