ENGLISH VERSION

TO INVEST OR PRESERVE?

“President Mattarella: Investing in Culture is an Investment in Our Country’s Growth” The statement was made by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, some time ago during a visit to the Pompeii Excavations. It is well known that “our country has the greatest artistic and cultural heritage in the world, and therefore there is not only a need to protect and preserve it but also to enhance it, which is a duty towards our history, our future, and the entire world. Therefore, every investment takes into account this duty and the extraordinary benefits it offers to our country with undeniable economic and social advantages.”

Consequently, iconic monuments such as the Orvieto Cathedral and St. Patrick’s Well represent a precious asset not only for the city but also for the nation. But how can we make the most of them? The answer comes from entrepreneurial activities that should work alongside institutions in a spirit of close cooperation. Take, for example, the “Business Makes Culture” project of the Lazio Region, which has invested significant economic resources to support 48 innovative projects proposed by 65 micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises for the enhancement and enjoyment of cultural sites.

It has been observed that betting more confidently on the beauty and excellence of a region is one of the great opportunities to create high-quality jobs and development. Unfortunately, two opposing positions make the task more challenging, essentially two sides of the same coin. On one hand, there is the shortsighted view that “you can’t eat culture,” that there’s no need to develop projects to improve the use of our monuments because what matters is physical access. In other words, what already exists is sufficient. On the other hand, there is the belief that enhancing a monument means proposing a tourist-commercial exploitation model. This consideration, perhaps more shortsighted than the first, risks lazily pushing local authorities into a stagnant position where artistic heritage is believed to generate wealth on its own, almost magically, without genuine investment. This way, culture is seen as a “deposit” to be exploited, essentially a simple rent. Such an approach is one of the main reasons preventing cultural assets from transforming from lifeless places, where one merely manages what already exists, into vibrant locations capable of not only preserving cultural heritage but also producing new art, culture, and, consequently, innovation.

Believing in beauty is not enough; there must be an ability to turn this beauty into an ‘attraction’ starting from the city’s greatest cultural assets, such as the Cathedral and St. Patrick’s Well, whose value is not only aesthetic. In a market where consumers are increasingly sophisticated, it is necessary to consider tourists no longer as passive spectators but at the center of the visiting experience that should become an event to see, hear, and contemplate. This way, visitors are encouraged to become contemplators, that is, to have a personal and total experience of the artwork that transforms them from mere spectators into co-protagonists of the piece.

So, the question arises: invest in culture or preserve? Being custodians of beauty today doesn’t mean rediscovering its value and transmitting its message through new, more suitable means of communication for our times.”
